When your spine is misaligned it can impinge on the nervous system in your body. Studies have shown that the nervous system has an effect on the functionality of your immune system. When your nervous system is under stress and not functioning properly, your immune system cannot work at an optimal level. Chiropractors work with the nervous system by aligning the spine to relieve any stress on nerves. This allows the immune system to work at a higher level. While chiropractic is not a cure for autoimmune disorders, many patients experience improvement in their condition with chiropractic care.

My 11 yr. old son was recently diagnosed with Juvenile Arthritis. The doctor asked if he ever complained after eating bread or products containing wheat. He said his “numbers” from blood work were not indicative of celiac but such that he was suspicious of gluten sensitivity. Then he promptly prescribed weekly methotrexate and Humira injections. When I asked if we should consider a diet change he denied that it was necessary. After a month of my own research I am extremely angry that this doctor’s first course of treatment is so drastic. These drugs are nasty to say the least. My husband and I have made the choice to forgo the injections at this time and completely overhaul our family diet plan. We are cutting grains and dairy completely in hopes to return to the doctor with significant improvement in my son’s inflammation sans drugs. I also plan to begin my son on a course of chiropractic treatments as well. All that to say, thank you Dr. Petersen for this post. Every bit of information I can find helps to validate what the doctor isn’t saying. I am curious how to interpret the blood work findings. I am calling for a copy of the results for myself. Is there an accepted range I can refer to that will indicate celiac vs. sensitivity?
Thank you.

Hello Michelle,
I think you and your husband are pursuing a wise course. Feel free to send me the test results. I cannot diagnose your son, having never examined him, but I can look at the lab tests.
I’m not sure where you live but we’d be more than delighted to help you. As you know, arthritis is an autoimmune disease and much autoimmune stems from a hyperactive immune system and an unhealthy intestine. This is our specialty. Quick action while your son is young would be in order and could see a nice reversal.
Please let me know if you’d like a free health analysis – call 408-733-0400. We are a destination clinic and treat patients from across the country and internationally.
Best,
